visionary art .:. definitions anyone?
i've often looked at visionary art as art which explores the wider expanses of ourselves and the world (which we are) by accessing and art:iculating the non-ordinary realms. i'm interested if anyone sees it differently.
fairly recently i've art:iculated why visionary art seems very important to me: it helps us, in a planet time when we face great challenges, to access the entirety of ourselves as individuals at one with the whole - the indra:net integrating itself more deeply into our consciousness, so that we can understand and access our true power for the miraculous, in a time when it may just take nothing short of a miracle to preserve our species.
i am fascinated also by this quote in michael whelan's artist's statement:
"The dignity of the artist lies in his duty of keeping awake the sense of wonder in the world."
-G.K. Chesterton
what is the value, in all of your minds, in awakening a sense of wonder in the world? i'm curious.
much love!

People need to create things, it’s in our being. Our being is the product of unfathomable creation. Many forces of awareness intersect right here in our bodies, imbuing us with the interaction that gives us the power to extend this manifestation of imagination.
Some people create food, some create music- some create drama to make their lives interesting so they can create solutions.
Artists by trade are expected by most people to create beauty. Most people in any given culture share a common vision of beauty. So for those beings with a vision of creation; artists, the culture institutes a state of creative flow at the general level of sophistication as the anybody who would support the artwork. The artist is then responsible to adapt to the institution in order to attain the respect it takes to interact with the levers of society.
A successful artist, one versed in the forms of their medium and channeling the collective vision, will take their livelihood as seriously as the carpenter who built your house takes construction, or the farmer who plants the seeds takes his harvest.
Most of the working class have a very tangible service to offer which keeps their livelihood churning in the flow of civilization. Somebody designed and built all the bikes, somebody constructed the neighborhood, some people actually know how to call computers into existence… what does 'art' have to offer them in return?
No artist creates artwork just for themselves. Creation is the pathway bridging dreams to the ability to share them with others. And there is a chasm between imagination and what's real- between the wildest mental symphony and what the fingers are manifesting spontaneously.
Once the artist is able to manifest a vision of beauty which others can share, the artwork becomes a social medium, an object of collective perception which contributes to the cultural landscape.
Now to span the chasm between imagination and manifestation, the artist has to build a bridge, and this bridge could be considered ‘talent’. Talent is the portal bridging these dimensions.
This is a most subtle bridge, talent. No amount of exerting gross efforts will not call it into existence, although cultivating the right habits and insight will effortlessly manifest it. The subtlety of this portal brings integrity to it’s creation. It connects the unhinged spontaneous flows of ethereal realms into form that can be tangibly shared with other beings, rendering the artist a real bridge between these dimensions.
If the construction of this bridge is undertaken as seriously as a contractor takes the building a bridge which many people will drive over each day, the artist who is the bridge will have found the support of all who identify with their creation, and will attract to themselves many people who share this vision. People who have never seen that vision will be introduced to it, and it may expand their perception into new realms.
This is what the artist has to offer- music, imagery, stories… a vision of consciousness that no camera will ever capture, yet we would all love to share.

beautiful, delvin!
this resonates deeply for me.
the soul portraits i've done for allies and strangers have been simultaneously
an intuitive visioning of their unique archetypal paths and soul essences
and a healing weave of magic
designed with the intention to both challenge them into new evolutionary levels
and affirm for them their divine ability to unfold those potentials
i am a lunar seed and all.
forever inspired by the challenges
which envoke the deepest and widest scope
of potential evolutionary blooming
so yes, world builders indeed, and life builders.
in this sense i can understand the key of loving intention in the work
i am also vibing with the potential art has
as a style of transformative education
as a visual learner, with a photographic memory
i know that images are imprinted deeply into my consciousness
and when their meanings are well communicated, i am well taught
the power that art can have as a spiritually awakening
and transformative experience for the artist
is often communicated in the work and transferred to others
i imagine this can envoke loads of deep authentic contact for the viewers
with certain interconnected aspects of themselves and their world
as potentials or existing realities
thus teaching and evolving everyone who works with the piece.
i have certainly experienced that.
yay, thanks for helping me deepen the wisdom.
i did write a brief article for spiral lotus about visionary art
i will surely expand that into something more profound
but for now, it's a good introduction, with nice tags to come along.
it's meant as an outreach piece, as well as inspiration for existing aritsts
i'll include the links even tho we all have them
just to give an idea of how the article is being presented on the site
here is the article...
visionary art as an evolutionary key
as the delicate ecology of gaia slips quickly into potential extinction through resource extraction and political turmoil,
human beings face at this time the most poigniant challenge in our long history, from the birth of the very first cell
on this beautiful planet. the one, unbroken dna lineage of that first cell has spiralled out into a vast multifold
of evolutionary simplexity, and brought human beings into a crucial moment in time where our ability to reflect
on ourselves as gaia, is being put to the test. as planetary stewards, humans are being called to tangibly
communicate and thus activate the immaculate
potential and scope of ourselves and our world, which truly spans far beyond the realms of ordinary perception.
we are being humbly asked, by the earth who evolved us into being, to open the visionary eye, truly witnessing
the fullness of our life, as a whole system, so that we can consciously
evolve ourselves back into the dynamic ecology of gaia.
the visionary artist takes the crucial roles of shaman, teacher, healer, lover,
steward and journeyer between and beyond the worlds. as heroic as these roles may be, this world is calling
each individual to become, in their own way, an artist. visionary art is a central strategy in the forging
of a sustainable human culture on planet earth. by nurturing the evolutionary qualities of wonder and reverence,
this new style of realism takes its shape in all forms of life on this planet and unites all beings within its
universal scope. like most sustainable action, visionary art begins at our doorstep. we can empower ourselves in
our every day lives, our jobs, our passions and pitfalls, to instill a sense of wonder and artistic appreciation
for the world we live in. from there on, it's infinite, and the path is pure bliss.

an exerpt from "the mission of art" by alex grey :
Art reveals the true nature of human character, from the unflinching self-portraits of Rembrandt to Goya's portraits of the grandiloquently superficial royal family. Art shows the entire spectrum of character, from shallow and pathological ugliness to radiant and mystical beauty. A walk through an art museum that has objects from various world cultures can foster appreciation of the diversity of humanity and the creative imagination. Art can amplify compassion and sensitivity by sharing deep feelings. Listening to music such as Beethoven's ninth symphony can cause people to enter ecstatic states. Art can point to the many levels of reality - the physical body, the emotion, the intellect, the inuition and spirit. Art can make visible the subtle bodies, as in the paintings of saints with halos and auras, and provide a home for fantastic demonic and luminous angelic beings. Art can show the importance of respect and collaboration between people, as in the AIDS-quilt project. Any orchestra or dance company requires this kind of collaboration as well. Art can demonstrate the intricate interconnectedness of the web of life, as in magnificent landscapes, or the cosmological mandalas from Native Americans, Australian Aborigones and Tibetan Buddhists. Art can portray human struggle and suffering but can also uplift the soul. Art can point to the transcendental source of wisdom. By doing all these things and more, Art can encourage and nurture what is best in us and give people joy and hope.
If we cannot envision a better world, we cannot create one.
